A breast cancer diagnosis and the treatments that follow can have a significant impact on your body, affecting everything from movement and strength to confidence and everyday activities. Whether you've recently undergone surgery, are currently receiving treatment or are several years into your recovery, specialist physiotherapy can help you manage the physical challenges associated with breast cancer and support your rehabilitation journey. At Podium Therapies in Rhiwbina, Cardiff, our Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, Tor, brings over 28 years of NHS experience, including establishing and leading a dedicated Physiotherapy and Exercise Prescription Service at the Breast Centre, Llandough Hospital. Her extensive clinical knowledge and compassionate approach ensure that every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, goals and stage of recovery. Breast cancer surgery, reconstruction, radiotherapy and other treatments can sometimes lead to complications such as restricted shoulder movement, muscle weakness, scar tissue tightness, pain and fatigue. Some individuals may also develop axillary web syndrome (cording), which can cause tight, uncomfortable bands of tissue extending from the armpit into the arm, restricting movement and affecting everyday activities. Through a combination of hands-on physiotherapy, gentle soft tissue techniques, specialist scar therapy and individually prescribed rehabilitation exercises, Tor aims to improve mobility, restore strength, reduce discomfort and help you regain confidence in your body. Treatment can also provide support with recognising and managing lymphoedema symptoms, alongside your existing NHS care, as well as helping you safely return to exercise, work, hobbies and the activities you enjoy. We understand that everyone's experience of breast cancer is different. Some people may need support shortly after surgery, while others experience ongoing tightness, discomfort or movement restrictions months or even years after completing treatment. Your initial appointment includes a thorough consultation and assessment, giving you time to discuss your medical history, treatments, concerns and personal rehabilitation goals. From there, Tor will develop an individual treatment plan combining appropriate hands-on techniques, education and exercises to support your recovery. Whether you're at the beginning of your breast cancer journey or looking for support years after treatment, we're here to help you move better, feel better and live better.
